Privacy Policy
Effective date: 4 September 2026
Lightning Maths ("Lightning Maths", "we", "us", "our") operates the Lightning Maths website at www.lightningmaths.com.au and the Lightning Maths YouTube channel (together, the "Service"). We are committed to protecting the privacy of our users in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) set out in that Act. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, hold, use and disclose personal information in connection with the Service as it currently operates.
Lightning Maths is built for kids, so we have kept things simple by design: no account is needed to use the Service — every lesson, video and quiz is free to use, with nothing to sign up for and nothing to log into. The only optional exception is described in section 1.1 below: a parent can choose to give us their email address to receive occasional updates. Nothing else about using a lesson, video or quiz requires any information from you or your child.
1. Personal information we collect
Because the Service does not require an account, we collect very little personal information, and none of it is provided directly by a child. What we do collect is limited to:
1.1 Email sign-up for lesson updates
- If a parent chooses to, they can submit their email address through the sign-up form at lightningmaths.com.au/signup to receive occasional updates when new lessons are published.
- The sign-up form also asks which topic you'd most like to see next (e.g. "times tables," "fractions," or another topic you type in yourself) — this is optional and used only to help us prioritise what to build next.
- The form also has an optional field for your first name. If you provide it, we use it only to personally thank you by email if we go on to build the topic you asked for — we do not publish, display or share your name anywhere, and it is not used for anything else.
- Providing your email address is entirely optional and separate from using the Service — every lesson, video and quiz remains free to use without it.
- Your email address, first name (if provided) and topic preference are sent to and stored in Brevo, our email marketing platform (see section 3).
1.2 Basic website analytics
- We use Google Analytics to understand how many people visit the website and which lessons or pages are popular.
- We have not configured Google Analytics to collect anything that identifies you or your child personally, and we do not use it for advertising. We do not enable Google Signals or any other feature that would link analytics data to an individual's Google account or use it for ad personalisation.
- This may include general technical data such as browser type, device type, approximate location (derived from IP address), pages viewed and time spent on the site.
1.3 YouTube viewing data
- Our videos are published under YouTube's "Made for Kids" settings, which switches off personalised ads, comments, and data collection while your child watches.
- If you watch our videos on YouTube directly (rather than embedded on our site), YouTube's own privacy practices apply to that viewing — see section 7 below.
1.4 Course purchases
- If a parent or guardian chooses to purchase one of our optional paid digital courses ("Courses"), the checkout itself is provided by Stripe, a third-party payment processor. Stripe collects and processes your card and payment details directly; we do not receive, see or store your full card number or other payment details at any time.
- What we do receive from Stripe, and store ourselves (in Supabase, our database provider), is limited to: the email address used at checkout, which Course was purchased, the amount paid, and a Stripe transaction reference. We use this to confirm your purchase and send you access to the Course.
- Purchasing a Course is designed for a parent or guardian to do, not a child, in the same way as the email sign-up described in section 1.1.
1.5 What we do not collect
- We do not collect a child's name, age, school, email address, photograph or any other identifying information, because there is no account, profile, chat, comment or sign-up feature anywhere in the Service that a child would use directly.
- Other than the limited purchase information described in section 1.4, we do not collect payment or billing information of any kind, and your full card details are never seen or stored by us at all, only by Stripe.
- If you email us directly (see section 9), we will hold your email address and the content of your message, but this is a choice you make, not something collected automatically.
2. Why we collect this information
We use the information described above only to:
- send you occasional updates about new lessons, if you've chosen to sign up for them, and use your stated topic preference to help prioritise what we build next;
- personally thank you by name, by email, if you've told us what topic to build next and we go on to build it — only if you've given us your first name;
- process your purchase and deliver access to a Course you've bought, if you choose to buy one;
- understand how the website is used, so we can improve lesson content and site design;
- respond to any enquiry you send us directly;
- monitor and maintain the security and proper functioning of the website; and
- comply with our legal obligations, including tax and financial record-keeping obligations for Course purchases.
We do not use any information collected through the Service to build advertising profiles of children, and we do not use it for marketing or advertising directed at children. Update emails are sent only to the parent's own nominated email address — a child has no way to sign up, since doing so requires actively submitting an email address through the form.
3. Disclosure of personal information
We do not sell personal information. We disclose the limited information described in section 1 to the following service providers, each of whom processes it on our behalf:
- Brevo — our email marketing platform, which stores sign-up email addresses/topic preferences and sends update emails. Brevo is based in the European Union (France);
- Stripe — our payment processor, which collects and processes your payment details directly when you purchase a Course. Stripe is based in the United States;
- Supabase — our database provider, which stores the limited purchase record described in section 1.4 (email address, Course purchased, amount, transaction reference) so we can confirm and deliver your purchase;
- Google — as the provider of Google Analytics (see section 1.2), and because our contact mailbox (hello@lightningmaths.com.au) ultimately forwards into a Gmail inbox for us to read and reply to messages;
- ImprovMX — a free email-forwarding service that receives mail sent to hello@lightningmaths.com.au and routes it into the Gmail inbox above; it does not read or use the content of that mail beyond forwarding it;
- our website hosting provider (Vercel).
Overseas disclosure: Brevo, Stripe, Supabase, Google and our hosting provider store or process data on servers located outside Australia (including the European Union and the United States). Before doing so, we take reasonable steps, consistent with Australian Privacy Principle 8, to ensure that overseas recipients handle information consistently with the APPs, including through contractual protections such as each provider's own data processing terms.
4. Marketing communications
If you sign up for lesson update emails, we send them consistent with the Spam Act 2003 (Cth) and the guidance of the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). Every update email will:
- clearly identify Lightning Maths, our ABN, and hello@lightningmaths.com.au as the sender (set as the default footer on every campaign we send);
- contain a functional, free unsubscribe mechanism that does not require you to log in or create an account.
You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any update email, or by emailing us at hello@lightningmaths.com.au. Update emails are sent only to the address you provided — never to a child, since a child has no way to sign up in the first place.
5. No advertising
There are no ads anywhere on our website, including on lesson and quiz pages. We do not use any information collected through the Service to serve advertising to you or your child.
6. Children's privacy
Lightning Maths is designed for children to use directly, without needing a parent or guardian to create an account on their behalf. We are conscious of the additional sensitivity of children's privacy and, accordingly:
- no account, login, chat, comment, forum or profile feature exists anywhere in the Service, so a child has no mechanism to submit personal information to us or to any other user;
- the only places any email address is collected are the sign-up form and the Course checkout, both of which are designed and worded for a parent or guardian to use, not a child;
- our YouTube videos are made under YouTube's "Made for Kids" child-safety settings, which switches off personalised ads, comments, and data collection while your child watches;
- we do not design the Service, or any on-site or in-video prompts, to create urgency or pressure a child into asking a parent for anything (sometimes described as "pester power" design);
- we do not knowingly use any information relating to a child's use of the Service for behavioural advertising or share it with third parties for their own marketing purposes.
7. YouTube and other third-party platforms
Our videos are hosted on YouTube and may also appear embedded on our website. When you or your child watch a video directly on YouTube (including via the YouTube app or youtube.com), that viewing is also subject to Google/YouTube's own privacy policy and terms, over which we have no control. We have published our videos under YouTube's "Made for Kids" designation, which limits the data YouTube itself collects and disables personalised ads and comments for that content — but we encourage parents to review YouTube's own privacy practices as well.
8. Cookies and similar technologies
Our website uses cookies associated with Google Analytics to understand how the site is used, as described in section 1.2. If you purchase a Course, Stripe's checkout page may also set its own cookies for fraud prevention and to process your payment securely; these are set and controlled by Stripe, not by us. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies, because the Service carries no ads. You can control cookies through your browser settings; this will not affect your ability to use any lesson, video or quiz, since none of them require you to be logged in.
9. Access, correction and complaints
If you have signed up for updates, sent us an enquiry, or have any question about what limited technical/analytics information we hold, you can request access to or correction of that information, or make a complaint about how we have handled personal information, by contacting us at hello@lightningmaths.com.au. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may lodge a complaint with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at www.oaic.gov.au or on 1300 363 992.
10. Data security and retention
We take reasonable technical and organisational steps to protect the information we do collect from misuse, interference, loss, and unauthorised access, modification or disclosure. Sign-up email addresses are retained in Brevo until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them; analytics data is retained only for as long as reasonably necessary, consistent with Google Analytics' standard retention settings. Course purchase records held in Supabase (email address, Course purchased, amount paid, and Stripe transaction reference) are retained for as long as needed to provide you with access to the Course, and afterwards for as long as required by our tax and financial record-keeping obligations (generally around five years), after which they are deleted.
11. Future changes — paid membership
Separately from the Courses described in section 1.4, we plan to introduce an optional paid membership in future, offering an online practice portal, progress tracking and downloadable worksheets for parents who choose to create an account. The lessons and quizzes available on the Service at that time will remain free to use without an account; new content areas added in future (for example, planned high-school content) may be offered under a different access model, which will be clearly described at the time it is introduced. When that membership launches, this Privacy Policy will be replaced with an updated version describing the additional personal information collected at that time (such as a parent's name and billing details), and we will publish the updated Policy before the membership becomes available.
12. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example to reflect changes in our practices or the law (including the anticipated Children's Online Privacy Code, a change in business structure, or the future introduction of a paid membership described above). We will post the updated Policy on the Service with a revised effective date.
13. Contact us
